Courses
First Year - Winter 2012

All First Year students are required to undertake FOUR Media Studies Courses (two from Autumn and two from Winter Term).  The courses result in practical submissions both of which must be passed in order to complete the Media Studies submission requirement (MS1).

First Year students will meet with the Media Studies Course Tutors on   Friday 30th September at 12.30pm in the First Year Studio Space to discuss the courses on offer.  Registration for courses will take place online the same day, and the classes will commence on Tuesday 5th October.  Attendance to all classes is compulsory.

Registration for Winter Term Courses will take place at the beginning of the Winter Term and students will be reminded of the process via the Events List.

  • 32 Bedford Square
    First Floor Front

  • Tuesdays 2-5pm

Taking inspiration from the work of legendary American landscape photographer Robert Adams, this year we will exploring landscape photography in suburbia. Instead of photographing iconic architecture within the city centre we will be working at the periphery of the city, where the landscape is more subtle and reveals its forms more quietly.

  • Shin Egashira
  • 33 Bedford Square
    First Floor Back

  • Tuesdays 2-5pm

Techniques for constructing performative instruments, including collage and bricolage, to be tested through application to the city. We will be working both on drawings and physical assemblages to develop design concepts.

  • Elif Erdine
  • 36 Bedford Square
    South Jury Room

  • Tuesdays 2-5pm

The course will bring together different methods of algorithmic modeling and rapid prototyping in order to design and fabricate a one-to-one scale lighting element for interior environments. Students will be introduced to the principles of parametric tools using Rhinoceros as the digital platform, where they will be producing a range of experimental design options depending on specific rules.

  • Trevor Flynn
  • 33 Bedford Square
    Ground Floor Back

  • Tuesdays 1-4pm

The figure will be used as a departure point as we work through several exercises that enable us to study tone, mass, line, simple underlying structures, in a range of drawing media and in short and longer poses from male and female models. We will also explore concept sketches, viewpoint, biomorphic improvisations and remind ourselves of the Matisse maxim "exactitude isn't truth."

  • Heather Lyons
  • 39 Bedford Square
    First Floor Front

  • Tuesdays 2-5pm

The spring term will form a deeper investigation into putting all the pieces together. We will look at typography and layout techniques in greater detail and take a critical look at layout strategies. By the end of the term, you should be communicating visually with impact.

  • Antoni Malinowski
  • 36 Bedford Square
    First Year Studio

  • Tuesdays 2-5pm

The course focuses on the interaction of  subtractive and  additive colour. We shall be considering micro structure of pigments and other materials as a source of the  perceptual interdependence of micro and macro scale.

  • Marlie Mul
  • 32 Bedford Square
    Second Floor Back

  • Tuesdays 2-5pm

In a course focused on formal improvisation, we each will work towards the creation of 1:1 scale functional objects from Styrofoam. Working according to a set of parameters, the object will be the site for finding a successful structure by means of both improvisation and calculation.
