Do you think of the sun as a yellow spot or do you think of a yellow spot as the sun? Introducing fundamental drawing techniques as a point of departure for excursions into the fertile ground between analogue and digital media, students are encouraged to explore novel methods for the quick and efficient creation of innovative images.

 

Seeking to explore the relationship not only between eye and hand, but between eye and hand and mouse and screen and paper, we ask the question "What happens to subject matter as it passes through different media?" How can experimental and experiential drawings be built up, step by step, through the piecemeal accretion of digital and analogue effects.

 

Over the course of nine hours, the students will become proficient with a wide range of drawing techniques, from mechanical pencil sketches through to digital oil brushes; we will paint ourselves into as many corners as we can find.

  • Session 1: Tuesday 14th Oct & Tuesday 11th Nov:

  • -Introduction to and demonstration of digital painting techniques

    -Fundamentals of drawing: Perspective, light, texture

     

  • Session 2: Tuesday 21st Oct & Tuesday 18th Nov:

  • -Thumbnailing and composition

    -Shadows, atmospheres, chiaroscuro

     

  • Session 3: Tuesday 28th Oct & Tuesday 25th Nov:

  • –Speed painting, digital brushwork, glazing pixels

  • -Figure/ground relationships, line/form/value, layering
