How does the way we present information influence the way it is perceived and understood? How do we create visual narratives that are clear and compelling? Through this course, you will learn how to communicate and manipulate information through the use of graphic tools and techniques.

Each session will begin with a lecture followed by a studio session. During our lectures, we will cover graphic tools and techniques including layout strategies, typography, iconography and colour theory. We will look at different ways to map and chart information and different approaches to the visual representation of information.

During the autumn term, in order help you find your ‘voice’ and a visual language that works for you, we will focus on taking information from the analog world, digitizing it, analyzing it and creating a visual narrative around it. These visual narratives will be presented as A0 posters that you will complete in Illustrator. By the end of term you will have an arsenal of tools at your disposal that will allow you to create clear and impactful visual communications.

  • Session 1: Tuesday 4th Oct & Tuesday 8th Nov:

  • -Lecture: Information design overview. Maps and diagrams.
    -Workshop: Information gathering exercise. Scanning of images.

     

  • Session 2: Tuesday 11th Oct & Tuesday 5th Nov:

  • -Lecture: Colour and iconography. Introduction to Illustrator
    -Workshop: Visual analysis and mapping.

     

  • Session 3: Tuesday 18th Oct & Tuesday 22nd Nov:

  • -Lecture: Layout and typography.
    -Workshop: Presentation of posters, round 1; working session

     

  • Session 4: Tuesday 25th Oct & Tuesday 29th Nov:

  • -Lecture: Information design II.
    -Workshop: Final presentation of posters.
