Tuesdays 1-4pm

 

The figure will be used as a departure point as we work through several exercises that enable us to study tone, mass, line, simple underlying structures, in a range of drawing media and in short and longer poses from male and female models. We will also explore concept sketches, viewpoint, biomorphic improvisations and remind ourselves of the Matisse maxim "exactitude isn't truth."

The course is designed to build manual drawing skills and encourage groups to be more willing to draw as a means of exploring formal ideas. We will endeavour to shed restrictive drawing habits that condition our perception of form through “wrist-breaking” exercises. Participants are shown how to introduce reversibility into the drawing process thus allowing revision and change in drawings. This in turn leads to greater flexibility and suppleness. We will also build competence in handling several materials, explored as drawing implements in their own right to include: charcoal, conte crayon, graphite stick, tonal papers, soft pastels, coloured pencil.

  • -Shell and Skin; a study of the head and skull

  • -Articulation in the figure; occupancy of space, underlying geometry

  • Session 3: Tuesday 9th Feb & Tuesday 2nd Mar:

  • -Rotated pose; combining observation with imagination

  • -Final printing and project submission
