Light defines what is around us by day and night; the varying perception of the objects and volume which light has an impact on, contributes to the meaning of space. The concept of how light penetrates a place, and the way that it shapes it and alters it by means of shadows, renders lighting as a fundamental instrument of designing space.

Light Moments will experiment with the design and fabrication of one-to-one scale lighting elements for interior environments. In this setup, lighting becomes the design medium which brings together different methods of algorithmic modeling with various rapid prototyping techniques. The aim is to design lighting devices which will perform as differentiated systems according to set rules, including direct/indirect lighting, concentration, location, symmetrical/asymmetrical orientation, and structural performance.

Light Moments is an intensive computational platform where the continuity of the workflow between computational software and digital assembly procedures leading to physical fabrication is experimented with. The digital toolset comprises of a combination of modeling with Rhinoceros (.3dm) and coding with RhinoScript (.rvb). Students will be introduced to a range of modeling and scripting methods, all of which are concentrated on the essence of the brief. The functional prototypes will be assembled with either a single or a combination of several rapid prototyping techniques, including laser-cutting, CNC milling, and 3d-printing.
