During the spring term, you will be tasked with telling a story through graphics. You will learn how the use of type, iconography, pattern, colour, photographic imagery and layout schemes impact the messages and meaning of your work.

Each session will begin with a short lecture. We will look at different approaches to graphics from Swiss modernists to punk and new wave influences. We will look at the classics of infographics from the nineteenth century through to the contemporary generation of graphics via data and code.

During our working sessions, you will work with type and graphics using tools like Illustrator, InDesign, Fireworks. You will also have the opportunity to generate graphics using modified ActionScript and/or Processing libraries. In class, we will also look at ways that printing your work differs from presenting it digitally.

Your work for the term will culminate in an installation that uses a combination of mobile devices, LCD screens, projection and print to display your work.

  • Session 1: Tuesday 10th Jan & Tuesday 14th Feb:

  • -Lecture: Typography, iconography and symbolism
    -Workshop: Iconography and symbol development in Illustrator/Fireworks

  • Session 2: Tuesday 17th Jan & Tuesday 21st Feb:

  • -Lecture: Typography and Layout: a rapid fire history of approaches
    -Workshop: Master and student: create a poster in the style of a master

  •  

  • Session 3: Tuesday 24th Jan & Tuesday 28th Feb:

  • -Lecture: Infographics: means and methodologies for communicating concepts.
    -Workshop: Digital display workshop: planning your installations.

  •  

  • Session 4: Tuesday 31st Jan & Tuesday 6th Mar:

  • -Presentation of installations; work on accompanying booklets in InDesign.
