Rendering Environments
Matej Hosek

Intermediate - Autumn 2009

Open Room 2
Mondays 2-5pm

We will experiment with the genius loci phenomena using digital and analogue techniques such as collage, photomontage and 3D rendering. The aim will be to achieve a seamless manipulation of mainly photographic environment. The sensational value of a particular place is not always felt from an image, so we will try to extract it, emphasize and mediate to an observer. We will go back and forth between digital and analogue, keeping the digital divided between 2D and 3D (basic knowledge of preferably Lightwave, Rhino, VRay or  Maxwell  and intermediate knowledge of Photoshop is required), while analogue encompasses sketching and hand-painting over the digital template.

Final submissions will be individual A3 bounded portfolios, documenting the whole process and explaining the concept on approximately 5 pages, plus the final image full A3.The program will span from inspiration with other artist/media (photography, matte painting, mixed media), gathering references, composition, sketching, modelling/ rendering and finally composing and painting in 2D.

The course’s contents during both terms are identical, with one difference – 1st term is VRay oriented whereas the 2nd term focuses on Maxwell.
