Embodied Landscapes
Tobias Klein

Intermediate - Autumn 2009

Open Room 5 [36.211]
Mondays 2-5pm

Embodied Landscapes encompasses a fusion of voxel-based inside-out medical approaches in virtual environments with a more classical architectural polygonal point/vertex based design approach.

We will study Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) as a vital tool in diagnosis, research and visualization in medicine. This non-invasive investigation of the body yields a digital reproduction by measuring the relative densities of the body. Rather than the 2-D pixel representing pictorial space, the ‘voxel’ is used to visualize and inform space in three dimensions adding properties allowing the fusion of densities with space.

The projected voxel-body is generated through fields of density and viscosity that imply the merging of ‘inner’ and ‘outer’ space disregarding boundaries and hence allowing for a surgeon or architect to interface between actual/virtual and densities of matter/space.

This course seeks to cross medical voxel based software with representational mesh based 3d packages. In particular we will use Osirix and 3dmax/Rhino to manipulate voxel body data and create/render hybrid embodied landscape models. The resulting landscapes will be composed of a number of spatial frequencies at differing orientations where ‘space’ is generated through interlocking density fields.
