Located on the borderline between Tomorrowland and Fantsyland and modelled after the Matterhorn, a mountain in the Swiss Alps, the Matterhorn Bobsleds is an attraction at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Like in so many other attractions, Disney carefully constructed this fake monument using optical illusions of the likes of force perspective in order to create the seemingly real - the hyper-real.
The starting point of this course is a series of plans and sections of existing Disney attractions. These documents will be the base of your explorations into modes of representation and construction. We will use them in order to create a series of 3D models and subsequent renders that epitomise the binary tension between representation and construction. We will re-draw and further developed plans and section that twist and turn a seemingly un-natural relation between objectification of parallel projection plans and sections and highly observer based imagery.
This course is interested in the dichotomy between precise construction and narrative pictorial effect. Each Student will create his own reading and artificially enhanced version of a Disney attraction in the form of 2 renders and a re-designed, re-developed and challenged set of plan and section. Both documents will be printed on 1m x 1m and hung next to each other - opening the question of ambivalence and real versus fake. We will use Rhinoceros, 3ds Max, AutoCAD and Photoshop to create an articulated set of documents of our own augmented natural imitation.
As long as you do not touch it - it is real.
